Traffic Safety
Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.
Traffic Safety Reminders from The City of Calgary
The City wants to remind and encourage anyone who is driving children to school to operate their vehicles safely and responsibly. Parents and guardians are reminded not to park where it’s prohibited during drop off and pick up times, such as blocking crosswalks, laneways and private driveways.
Pick up and drop off times can get quite busy. Give yourself extra time to navigate safely around schools, whether you are walking, wheeling, or driving. For those who drive, help alleviate congestion by parking a block or two away and walking in, wherever possible.
Talk to your kids about safe travel practices like using crosswalks with patrols, looking all ways before crossing the street and not jaywalking across the roadways as a shortcut.

Student Pick-Up
Parents must go directly to the office to pick students up during school hours. Your child is then called down to the office. We ask that you let the teacher and the office know with an e-mail if your child will be leaving during school hours, if you are just picking up at the end day it is your responsibility to inform the office before 1:00pm Mondays – Thursday and 10:00 am Fridays if they take a bus. Please press extension 2 and leave a detailed message including bus, if you do not your are welcome to meet you child at their bus and pick them up there.
Illness or Emergency Student Pick-Up
If you are contacted to pick up a child who becomes sick at school we have a 30 minute policy, which means it is your responsibility to get here with in 30 minutes of being called or faster! Please ensure that your contact information is always up to date, your voice mails are activated and we have a list of trusted emergency contacts who could come in your place if you should so need. We will NOT release your children to anyone who is NOT on your approved for pick up list. Children who are sick should remain home with you until they are symptom free for at least 24 hours, and if they are sick in the morning it is always best to just keep them home in the morning.
Traffic Safety at Chris Akkerman
Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near the school, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.
Parking is limited at our school but by being courteous and following some simple common sense rules, student safety will be preserved. We need your help. We ask the following of parents who drive their children to school:
- Please do not stop or park in our bus loading zones. The buses have priority parking in these zones, and no other vehicles may stop or park there.
- Please do not jay-walk or allow your children to jay walk when being dropped off or picked up. Always use the crosswalk.
- Please do not drop children off in the parking lot.
- Please respect the leadership of our staff and their conscientious efforts to keep our students safe.
Safety and Courtesy are Key when Parking
Over the past few years, our neighbours have frequently complained about parents parking in the alley blocking garages. We know that parking at arrival and dismissal times is challenging for our families as we do not have enough parking at the school even for our staff. We ask parents to demonstrate courtesy and respect for our neighbours by parking away from garages and driveways.
RED areas are NO parking zones, GREEN areas are all acceptable places to park.
Parking in The Alley
Please do not park or drop off students in the alley becuase this is our bus zone.
