Volunteer Picnic & Music Monday Update
NO PETS are allowed on School Grounds - this is a city bylaw. Please leave your pets at home!
Our Volunteer Appreciation Picnic and Music Monday will go ahead on Monday June 15! There is NO alternative plan. We will NOT postpone this event to Tuesday.
Currently the forecast suggests Monday is better weather than Tuesday so we are going ahead with our plan tomorrow! Hats and sunscreen are needed!
- Please ensure you child is sent to school in their colour specific t-shirt. Check google classroom, or the Music Google Classroom if you are unsure, I am certain your child will also know. Every grade is assigned a colour. Uniform bottoms. Of course a formal uniform is always an acceptable alternative. The only exception; if is you have a dress in your class colour, you may wear the dress.
Thank you to all of the parents who have RSVP'd for our Volunteer Picnic. We have prepared a special treat especially for you! We can't wait to see you in the classrooms at 11:50 AM for the class picnic. Please come on into the building, sign in so we know you are here and then head off to the class you said you would be joining. Don't forget to bring your picnic lunch. Each class has a special presentation for you in the classroom before the picnic. You will need to be in the class by 11:50 AM for your appreciation. Please plan accordingly. Please don't be late, Teachers will share how the day will proceed at the picnic.
Music Monday
Parents, Chris Akkerman Community - Please join us at 1:00 PM for our Music Monday Events.
This will take place behind the school.
PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN BUS PARKING, PLEASE DO NOT PARK INFRONT OF GARAGES OR ACROSS FROM GARAGES. We encourage parents to park in the alley on the far side of the field. There are plenty of spaces!
If you plan to take your child home with you at the end of the day, instead of them riding the bus, ensure you let the office know by 11:30 AM. You MUST call the office. There will be no sign out sheets available as everyone will be participating in the volunteer picnic and Music Monday.
The office will be closed at 11:30AM, phones will not be answered.
Some tips to make Music Monday successful.
- There will be school chairs set up in the front for our Volunteers and School Council. You may put a blanket down in front of the chairs if you wish.
- Students will NOT be arranged in grade order. We will try to get signs up for each grade so you know where your children will be located for the presentation.
- Please bring your own lawn chairs. Set them up behind the school chairs we will have set up for volunteers.
- Students will be dismissed directly from the afternoon presentation. Each grade will have a meeting space in the area that they will go to, to gather their belongings and head off with their parents or to the buses. If your child is not riding the bus Monday, ensure you call the school before 11:30.
Thank you for attending this event - it promises to be a highlight of the school year.
We will make every effort to take video of each grade and load this video to our website so you are able to revisit the event!
We appreciate our community and all of the support you provide to ensure school wide events such as this are a grand success. Thank you for your continued support, participation and assistance. We are grateful for all you do!
Sports Day – June 19
We are excited for our upcoming Sports Day on June 19! This is a rain-or-shine event, so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.
Students should bring a water bottle clearly labelled with their name. Water bottles will be kept in a designated class area throughout the day. As many of us know from experience, unlabeled bottles can easily be misplaced — so please be sure names are clearly marked!
At the end of the day, students will enjoy a freezie treat, generously provided by our School Council, before dismissal.
If you are volunteering with your child’s class and would like to take your child home directly following the day’s activities, please inform your child’s teacher in advance, as the day will be busy and full of transitions.
Sports Day is meant to be a celebration of fun, participation, and community. Students will rotate through a variety of outdoor activity stations, often in mixed-age groups or with friends from other classes. This is all part of the experience! We encourage all students to get involved, try new activities, and most importantly, have fun.
- Volunteers - if you are shadowing your child, please ensure you allow them independence to choose where they will be going and the friends they will be sharing the day with.
- Volunteers - if you are assisting with a station, please ensure you connect directly with your classroom teacher in advance of Friday so we can place you at a station you are comfortable supporting.
All volunteers must have police clearance and register in advance to participate in the event. Thank you for your support with this.
Lost and Found: Reminder
Our Lost and Found is currently full. We kindly ask that you remind your child to check for any missing items. If weather permits, the lost and found will be wheeled outside on both Music Monday and Sports Day to allow parents to gather any familiar items.
Please note that any items not picked up and not clearly labelled with a student’s name will be donated the last week of school.
Transportation Registration - Last day to register is TODAY - Sunday June 14
Every student needs to be registered every year they attend Chris Akkerman. If you are registered this year for the bus and have not re-registered your child for next year, you MUST register then today! Today is your very last day to register students!
Please ensure you register all of your children for the bus. When you register for the bus, you are increasing your chances of ensuring a bus stop is closer to your home. For those of you in new communities, it is especially important that you register. This ensures that all of the children in your community have an opportunity to have a bus stop closer by than 2-3 communities over.
Apply Now for Yellow School Bus Service for 2026-2027
Registering for the bus in September means that you will be added to a bus stop that already exists. Routes are formed in July and when you register late you will be added to an already existing stop.
A message from school council
Dear Chris Akkerman School Families,
On behalf of the Chris Akkerman School Council, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and share a little information about the important role School Council plays in supporting our school community.
School Council serves as a bridge between parents, school administration, and staff. Our goal is to support student success by encouraging parent engagement, providing feedback and input on school initiatives, supporting school activities and events, and helping raise funds for projects and programs that directly benefit our students.
School Council meetings are open to all parents and guardians, and we encourage families to participate, share ideas, and help shape the future of our school. Whether you attend meetings regularly or simply stay informed through school communications, your involvement helps strengthen our school community.
We are pleased to introduce the Chris Akkerman School Council Executive for the 2026-2027 school year:
- Chair (President): Maninder Gill
- Vice Chair (Vice President): Harcharan Kaur
- Secretary: Shivani Sharma
- Key Communicator: Melissa Labine
- Fun Lunch Coordinator: Snanna Virk
- School Council Past Preseident and Casino Coordinator - Anjul Virk
Throughout the upcoming school year, School Council will share a brief update in the weekly school newsletter. Each week, we will provide useful information about School Council, opportunities for parent involvement, upcoming events, fundraising initiatives, and ways we are supporting students and staff at Chris Akkerman School.
We are also excited to share that School Council is currently working with FundScrip to introduce a new gift card fundraising program for our school community. FundScrip allows families to purchase gift cards from many popular retailers, grocery stores, restaurants, and gas stations they already use, while a percentage of each purchase is donated back to the school.
We are currently in discussions with FundScrip and expect the program to be ready for launch during the next school year. Once finalized, families will be able to conveniently order gift cards online and support our school at no additional cost.
We look forward to working together with all families to make Chris Akkerman School an even stronger and more vibrant learning community.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Maninder Gill, CAS School Council Chair Person and Chris Akkerman School Council Executive
