School Council Highlights and Nutrition Learning

We had a wonderful turnout at our School Council meeting last night. Thank you to the many families who took the time to attend, participate, and learn more about what is happening at Chris Akkerman School.

Parents received updates on a variety of important topics, including staffing, the soon-to-be-installed Gaga Ball Pit, our eventual casino fundraiser, government assessment information that will soon be sent home to families, used uniform sales, Chris the Cub shirt sales, the Grade 4 and 5 Student Survey, and the many activities and celebrations planned for Halloween. We also spent some time learning about the bylaws that guide both School Council and the School Fundraising Society.

Our School Fundraising Society continues to work hard to meet the requirements necessary to secure a casino fundraiser for our school. These fundraising opportunities provide significant benefits for our students and enhance the learning environment we are able to offer. One example is the beautiful mural on the side of our school. Created by Chris Akkerman students approximately three years ago, the mural continues to beautify our space and serves as a lasting reminder of our students' creativity and pride in their school.

Following the School Council meeting, parents participated in an engaging presentation focused on nutrition. Families were reminded of the importance of fueling both our bodies and our brains, particularly for children whose bodies and minds are still growing and developing.

Some of the key takeaways included the importance of avoiding sugar spikes and crashes, making breakfast a daily priority, and following the 80/20 rule by aiming for nutritious food choices most of the time while still enjoying treats in moderation. We also learned about choosing healthier sources of carbohydrates, such as fruits and whole grains, and the importance of including protein at every meal to support energy, focus, and overall health.

The presentation reinforced the value of choosing whole, minimally processed foods whenever possible. Healthy snacks that include whole grains, proteins, fruits, and vegetables can help children stay energized and focused throughout the school day. Whenever possible, nutritious snacks prepared at home are often a healthier alternative to highly processed options.

Thank you once again to all the parents who attended School Council, participated in the nutrition presentation, and contributed to another successful and informative evening. We appreciate your ongoing partnership and support of our school community.

Fire Drill Practice and Family Emergency Preparedness

Today, all students participated in a fire drill. I am proud to share that our students did an excellent job following expectations and demonstrating calm, safe behaviour throughout the exercise. These practice drills help ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency and allow us to continually strengthen our school safety procedures.

At Chris Akkerman School, we have detailed plans and procedures in place to support the safety and well-being of all students and staff during emergencies. Practicing these routines helps build confidence and preparedness for everyone.

As we talked with students about safety today, it reminded me of the importance of having a plan at home as well. Fire drills provide a wonderful opportunity for families to discuss emergency preparedness together. Do you have a family evacuation plan? Does everyone know how to safely exit your home and where to meet outside in the event of an emergency?

While we all hope to never need these plans, spending a few minutes talking about safety and preparedness can provide peace of mind and help keep loved ones safe. We encourage families to take this opportunity to review their own emergency plans together at home.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership in helping keep our students safe, both at school and at home.

We are still waiting for few more demographic forms which are not completed by parent.

Completing your child’s Annual Forms and Demographic Information is a requirement of the Alberta Ministry of Education. Please ensure all forms are submitted as soon as possible to keep your child’s information accurate and up to date. Thank you for your cooperation.

Fun Lunch Days – A Gentle Reminder About Outside Food

We are so grateful for the support you give our school community. On Fun Lunch days, we kindly ask that families do not send outside food from restaurants or vendors.

Our Fun Lunches are organized by our dedicated School Council volunteers as a fundraising effort to support programs and activities for all students. When outside lunches arrive from other vendors, it creates challenges for our office team and makes the Fun Lunch process more complicated to manage.

To help the day run smoothly for everyone, we ask that families participate in Fun Lunch through the School Council ordering system on those designated days.

If you have ideas about vendors, menu options, or the overall process, School Council would love to hear from you. They welcome more families getting involved and helping to shape future Fun Lunches.

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and continued partnership. Together, we make these special days successful for our whole community.

Reminder: Student Drop-Off and Morning Supervision

For the safety of all students, please remember that school supervision begins at 7:35 a.m. Students should not be dropped off before this time.

When arriving at school, please do not leave your child unattended unless you can see school supervisors outside. If supervisors are not yet present, please remain with your child until supervision begins.

Thank you for helping us ensure a safe and smooth start to each school day.
