Confirmation of Enrollment Intent for the 2025-2026 School Year

As we begin planning for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, we kindly ask for your assistance in confirming your family’s intentions regarding enrollment at Chris Akkerman School. This information is essential for us to ensure we are fully prepared to meet the needs of our students and provide the best possible learning environment.

Please take a moment to let us know if your child will NOT be returning for the 2025-2026 school year. You can confirm your plans by

E-mail : Sskawale@cbe.ab.ca/ ChrisAkkerman@cbe.ab.ca

Your timely response is appreciated and will help us with staffing, classroom assignments, and resource planning for the year ahead. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the enrollment process or your plans for the future, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s education. We look forward to another exciting year at Chris Akkerman School!

Black History Month

This month, our students will embark on a journey to explore and celebrate Black History, with a special focus on the contributions of Black Canadians. Through classroom activities, students will learn about influential Black figures who have made a significant impact on the world, while highlighting the achievements and legacies of Black Canadians who have shaped our history.

Students will engage in discussions, read books by Black authors, and create art inspired by renowned Black artists. These activities will provide meaningful opportunities to honor Black culture, history, and resilience, while fostering an environment of learning, respect, and celebration.

At Chris Akkerman School, we remain committed to fostering conversations about equity, inclusion, and historical awareness in our classrooms.

One remarkable Black Canadian who helped shape our country is Viola Desmond (1914-1965). A successful businesswoman and civil rights activist, Desmond made history in 1946 when she challenged racial segregation in Nova Scotia by refusing to leave a whites-only section of a movie theatre. Her courageous stand led to legal changes and inspired future civil rights movements in Canada. Today, she is honored on the $10 bill as a symbol of resilience and justice.

We encourage families to join us in this important celebration and support our students' exploration of Black history throughout the month of February.

Welcome Ms Seabrook

The grade 4 students in Ms Fensom’s class along with the entire teaching team would like to welcome Ms Seabrook to our grade 4 classroom. Ms Seabrook will be joining our team until Ms Fensom is able to return to her classroom. When you see Ms Seabrook ensure you say hello and welcome her to Chris Akkerman. We are grateful for the patience and understanding of our families as the class was without a consistent teacher for several weeks.  We are so pleased Ms Seabrook has joined our grade 4 team!

Dressing for the Weather

This week promises to be another cold one. Please ensure your children come to school with everything they need to be warm outside. The moment the temperature warms to –20 C all students will head outside, even for a few minutes. Fresh air and large body movement are two huge pieces of a successful learner. Sometimes, when the temperature is right around –20 we will get all students dressed in their warm clothes and head out for a quick walk/ run or game, just to get fresh air and bodies moving.  A warm coat (that students can zip up!) Snow pants, warm boots (no rubber/ rain boots please) and good mitts (please, no dollar store mitts as they don’t work well).  Parents of our youngest learners, please practice getting dressed in winter clothes at home with your children. Let them get dressed independently to see how they do. Coach them on the order they should put things on. If you haven’t taught your child how to get into their warm clothing and boots, now is the time!

French Carnival

We have moved the date of the French Carnival to April. Our Grade 5 Leadership students pointed out that the Sugar Shack was planned during Ramadan and asked for this event to be moved so all students could participate. Here is a great example of our amazing Grade 5 Leadership students!

Celebration of Learning

Kindergarten and Grade 1 Families are welcome to attend the assembly and then the Celebration of Learning. K and Grade 1 teachers will send out details, related to the time for the assembly on Tuesday, directly to their parents.

CAS Families; all families will have an opportunity to see their children in their grade level assembly. Since our school population is so large, we have divided the assemblies into two days. The second day will have the Celebration of Learning following the assembly. This is your opportunity to see your child perform in the assembly and then to celebrate with your child all of the amazing things they are learning in their class. We are hopeful all families will be able to attend their child’s Celebration of Learning.

If you are unable to attend the Celebration of Learning, please let your child’s teacher know, so we can find an adult/ staff member that your child can share and celebrate all of their learning with. We understand that it can be difficult to get time off of work to attend these daytime events and want to ensure your child is celebrated.
