During Strike Action
During strike action, CBE is prioritizing in-person learning. We are committed to supporting student learning and well-being while maintaining safe and welcoming school environments for students, staff and families. During strike action, all CBE schools and buildings will remain open and classes will continue. If you would like additional information please visit the CBE main webpage. (LINK). All activities planned at CAS on evenings and weekends have been cancelled or moved on line for the next weeks.
Pink Shirt Day
In 2007, two Nova Scotia high school students stood up for a Grade 9 student who was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. They distributed pink shirts to their classmates as a way to promote kindness and inclusion. What started as a small act of solidarity has grown into Pink Shirt Day, a global movement against bullying.
On Wednesday, February 26, we encourage all students and staff to wear a pink shirt to help spread kindness and create a sense of belonging at Chris Akkerman School! Promoting inclusion is something that happens every day in our school.

Ramadan and Lent
As we approach Lent and Ramadan, we recognize that these are significant times of reflection, fasting, and spiritual commitment for many families in our school community.
If your child will be fasting during Ramadan or observing Lenten fasting or dietary restrictions, we would appreciate it if you could inform your classroom teacher so we can best support your child at school. Our supports may include:
- Providing a quiet space during lunch if needed
- Being mindful of their energy levels throughout the day
- Making accommodations for physical activities such asr music if necessary
Please reach out if you have any questions or if there are specific ways we can support your child during this time. Communication and partnership between parents and the school will ensure we are all successful during this time.
Thank you for your partnership and for helping us create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
Confirmation of Enrollment Intent for the 2025-2026 School Year
As we begin planning for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, we kindly ask for your assistance in confirming your family’s intentions regarding enrollment at Chris Akkerman School. This information is essential for us to ensure we are fully prepared to meet the needs of our students and provide the best possible learning environment.
Please take a moment to let us know if your child will NOT be returning for the 2025-2026 school year. You can confirm your plans by
email : Sskawale@cbe.ab.ca/ ChrisAkkerman@cbe.ab.ca
If you are planning an extended absence that will include absence from the last week of June through the first week of September, then we need to speak with you immediately to confirm you attendance and ensure you can remain with Chris Akkerman School.
Your timely response is appreciated and will help us with staffing, classroom assignments, and resource planning for the year ahead. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the enrollment process or your plans for the future, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s education. We look forward to another exciting year at Chris Akkerman School!
Litter-less Lunch
Did you know – our lunches at CAS are supposed to be litter-less. This means, when you pack food for your child, all of the wrappers and containers should be coming home. This includes the organics, the yogurt cups and the granola bar wrappers. On Healthy Hunger days, your child should be bringing the containers for their lunch home with them. You might notice this practice being worked on this week and moving forward. We appreciate when you support these initiatives as it assists us at school in achieving goals set regarding recyclables and trash. When we meet our goals in these areas, it directly impacts funding to our building.
Blach History Month
This month, our students will embark on a journey to explore and celebrate Black History, with a special focus on the contributions of Black Canadians. Through classroom activities, students will learn about influential Black figures who have made a significant impact on the world, while highlighting the achievements and legacies of Black Canadians who have shaped our history.
Students will engage in discussions, read books by Black authors, and create art inspired by renowned Black artists. These activities will provide meaningful opportunities to honor Black culture, history, and resilience, while fostering an environment of learning, respect, and celebration.
This week in our message home to families we would like to highlight Carrie Best, who founded The Clarion, the first Black-owned and published newspaper in Nova Scotia. In 1952, she launched The Quiet Corner, a radio show that aired for 12 years across four radio stations in Canada’s Marime Provinces. Her work played a key role in advocating for equality and amplifying Black voices in Canada.
At Chris Akkerman School, we remain committed to fostering conversations about equity, inclusion, and historical awareness in our classrooms.
