International Women’s Day
As we celebrate International Women's Day, it's important to recognize the incredible contributions of women from all walks of life. This day is not only about honoring the achievements of women but also about inspiring the next generation of girls to dream big and reach for the stars.
Canada has been home to many remarkable women who have made significant contributions to our society. From Laura Secord, who played a crucial role in the War of 1812, to Dr. Irma Levasseur, a pioneering pediatrician who co-founded Sainte-Justine Children's Hospital.
These women, among many others, have paved the way for future generations with their courage, determination, and innovation.
Around the world, women have also made their mark. For instance, Sojourner Truth, an African American abolitionist and women's rights activist, and Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani advocate for girls' education, have shown us the power of resilience and the importance of standing up for what is right
Their stories remind us that no matter where we come from, we can make a difference.
To all the young girls in our school, remember that you have the power to achieve anything you set your heart and mind to. Whether you dream of becoming a scientist, an artist, a teacher, or a leader, know that your potential is limitless. Believe in yourself, work hard, and never be afraid to pursue your passions.
Let's celebrate the incredible women who have come before us and encourage our young girls to continue breaking barriers and making history.
Happy International Women's Day!
Professional Development Day Learning
One of the areas of focus for our recent PD Day was Collaborative Response.
Collaborative Response Initiative
Our recent PD Day focused on Collaborative Response, an ongoing effort where teachers work together to solve common issues and support our learners. We identify key issues, collect data, brainstorm interventions, apply them, and review progress after a few weeks.
Student Theft
We identified theft as a school-wide concern affecting all grades. Items taken include food, clothing, accessories, toys, and school supplies.
In an effort to address this school-wide problem, we are seeking the assistance of families.
Theft of Food:
- Reasons: Not enough food, boredom with lunch items, or no food.
- Solutions:
- Please pack enough food for your child. Growing bodies need more food than even last week.
- Ensure your child enjoys their lunch. Change items occasionally to keep things interesting.
- Ask your child what they see their friends eating that they would like to have.
The school provides food for those who need it. We will try to contact you before giving your child food. If we can't reach you, we will leave a message and feed your child. Donations of cheese sticks, yogurt tubes, and healthy granola bars (without peanuts) are always welcome!
Theft of Clothing, Accessories, and Toys:
- Reasons: Children may not understand the impact of their actions.
- Solutions:
- If your child brings home something that isn't theirs, please return it to the teacher and email us. We will ensure it gets back to the rightful owner.
- Label all your child's items (shoes, jackets, mitts, etc.) to prevent mix-ups.
- Please avoid sending toys or treasures to school. The school provides all necessary supplies.
Thank you for your support. Parents are our best partners in solving issues in our school. We will update you over the next 6 weeks as we work to reduce theft.
Wishing those who celebrate a blessed Ramadan and Passover!
As we continue through the Holy month of Ramadan and the time of Passover, we want to extend our warmest wishes to all those observing. Ramadan and Passover is a time of reflection, gratitude, and community, and we recognize the strength and dedication of our students and families during this sacred time.
We appreciate the value of kindness, patience, and generosity that Ramadan and Passover teaches, and we encourage everyone to support one another with understanding and compassion. If your child requires any accommodation during fasting, please do not hesitate to reach out to your teacher or the office.
Our supports may include:
- Providing a quiet space during lunch if needed
- Being mindful of their energy levels throughout the day
- Making accommodations for physical activities- such as music if necessary
Wishing you and your loved once peace, health, and many blessings.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s education. We look forward to another exciting year at Chris Akkerman School!
Litter-less Lunch
Did you know – our lunches at CAS are supposed to be litter-less. This means, when you pack food for your child, all of the wrappers and containers should be coming home. This includes the organics, the yogurt cups and the granola bar wrappers. On Healthy Hunger days, your child should be bringing the containers for their lunch home with them. You might notice this practice being worked on this week and moving forward. We appreciate when you support these initiatives as it assists us at school in achieving goals set regarding recyclables and trash. When we meet our goals in these areas, it directly impacts funding to our building.
